In 1999, after a 25 year career with the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Mike chose to accept an opportunity for early retirement and thereby began his second career in land conservation and public land consulting. During his twenty-five year career with BLM Mike served as Branch Chief in BLM’s National Land and Realty Division in Washington, Deputy State Director in Nevada, District Manager in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Area Manager in Lake Havasu City, Arizona. Mike also served as a Congressional Fellow and Legislative Assistant (1991-93) for U.S. Senator Pete V. Domenci (R-NM) where he was responsible for public land and environmental issues.
In launching his second career, Mike joined The Conservation Fund (TCF), where he continues today to serve as the Nevada and Southwest Director. Since 1999, he has been responsible for a number of large projects, including the acquisition of the Kane and Two Mile Ranches, that encompass nearly 100 miles of the Grand Canyon’s North Rim. The expansive inholding connects three national monuments, two national recreation areas, eight wilderness areas, and controls grazing permits across nearly 900,000 acres of federal land.
Additionally, Mike has played a leading role in TCF’s national mitigation efforts working on behalf of the El Paso Natural Gas Company’s Ruby Pipeline Project (WY to CA), Kern River Gas Transmission Company’s (WY to CA) pipeline, and the largest solar generation site in the United States, owned and operated by Brightsource Energy and located on public land south of Las Vegas.
Mike has also served on numerous Boards and Committees at the local, state, and national level, including:
• Past Chair, Clark County Nevada Desert Conservation Plan
• Governing Board Member, Policy Analysis Center for Western Public Lands
• Member, National Environmental Stewardship Committee, NCBA
• Member, USFWS Mexican Wolf Coexistence Council
• Past Chair, National Partnership Committee, Society of Range Management
• Past Chair, Lake Havasu City, AZ Parks & Recreation Advisory Board
• Past President, Spanish Trail Country Club, Las Vegas
• Senior Land and Mineral Training Instructor, BLM National Training Center
In 2000, Mike and Barry Stubbs established Robcyn, LLC, the original consulting firm which pre-dated the creation of Abbey, Stubbs and Ford. Between 2009 and 2012, while Bob Abbey was serving as National Director of BLM, Mike and Barry resumed operations under Robycn, LLC, until such time, when Bob rejoined the Abbey, Stubbs and Ford partnership. To date, Mike continues to work on a variety of issues developing effective land and resource management strategies that balance economic development and achieve conservation objectives.
